| Sponsored singing this weekend |
[Apr. 17th, 2009|11:15 am] |
This weekend, I'll be taking part in Cambridge University Gilbert & Sullivan Society's sponsored 24-hour sing-through of all 13 G&S operettas. The event is part of Cambridge RAG; here's the list of charities.
If you'd like to sponsor me, just email me with an amount and stating whether it's a total or an amount per operetta completed (I've no idea how many I'll manage; it could be anywhere between 3 and 13). I'll email the sponsors with the results on Monday. |

I might or might not be able to make it myself, but I thoroughly recommend it. To be notified of future Gilbert & Sullivan events, join the soc-gands mailing list. |

| # A terrible disclosure has just been made |
[Nov. 23rd, 2007|10:55 am] |
I've been turned down for Pirates of Penzance at the Arts Theatre next term. Can anyone recommend any other interesting singing opportunities for a tenor after Christmas? They needn't actually be on stage, but bonus points if they're G&S or similar, because otherwise, given that three weeks at Minack would be rather too many days of holiday, my next G&S show will be this time next year. :-( |

| Ruddigore, Pirates, The Orange Box |
[Nov. 14th, 2007|12:20 pm] |
Ruddigore, Wednesday to Saturday next week, 8pm at the Robinson College Auditorium, £7/£5. Also, if you play an instrument and are free on any of those nights, get in touch with Debbie Murray (email dfm30) as we'd like a slightly bigger orchestra. I'll be in the chorus as usual.
Also, next term's show is The Pirates of Penzance, which was my first encounter with G&S back at Warwick and is, I think, my favourite of those I've seen. This one will be at the Arts Theatre and will be a lot of work, but very much worth doing. :-) Auditions, if anyone else wants to take part, are 7:45-10 tonight at Catz Chapel, and tomorrow (7:45-10) and Friday (7:15-10) in the Lloyd Room at Christ's. Not sure when I'm going yet.
In other news, I can thoroughly recommend The Orange Box. I recently finished Portal, and loved every minute of it, especially the ending song, Still Alive. Even better, that and Half Life 2 (so presumably the other games too) work fine in Wine; I've been playing them on Ubuntu. :-) |

| Ruddigore; Pirates singthrough |
[Oct. 9th, 2007|05:09 pm] |
The university term has started, which means I have some convenient, enjoyable singing opportunities again, with Cambridge G&S soc. This makes me happy. :-) I'll be in their chorus for Ruddigore, which will almost certainly be in the week beginning 19th November in Robinson Brickhouse theatre. There's a Facebook group where updates should appear. Also, they have a singthrough of Pirates of Penzance tomorrow night which I thoroughly recommend; it's at 8pm in the Blythe Room at Clare Colony (south from Castle Hill).
Singthrough directions update: you need to use the Chesterton Lane entrance. From the crossroads, go past the church and the tall brick building on your left, and THEN turn left and left again to head towards the triangular building. There will be signs up & the doors will be open! |

| Sorcerer venue CORRECTION |
[Jun. 18th, 2007|09:59 pm] |
They lied! It's actually in Sidney Sussex Chapel (still at 1:30pm on Wednesday 20th June, and the garden party is still thereafter in Newnham gardens). |

| Sorcerer venue |
[Jun. 8th, 2007|09:48 am] |
People who asked where to come and see the Gilbert & Sullivan society's performance of The Sorcerer (on Wednesday 20th June): It's in the Octagon Room Sidney Sussex Chapel and will start at 1.30pm. After the show we head over to the Newnham gardens for the partay, which I think starts about 3pm.
Also, Maelstrom starts this evening and new group and not ready and not enough time and not packed and aaaaaargh... it'll be a lot of fun though. Interesting developments include the well-known singing wemic Gin Tang having apparently gone missing. I hope she reappears; otherwise a lot of people will miss her and joining her songs around the camp fires. |

| The Sorcerer |
[May. 17th, 2007|11:05 pm] |
The Gilbert & Sullivan Society May Week show is The Sorcerer. I auditioned for a principal part, unsuccessfully, but I think that's to be expected on a first attempt. I'll therefore be in the chorus again, and I very much encourage everyone to join me who can. Just turn up tomorrow (Friday) evening at the Knox-Shaw room of Sidney Sussex at 19:15 for an informal singthrough, or even on the day. The performance itself will be on Wednesday 20th June at 13:30, as part of the G&S garden party. |

| And now, back to… not being busy? |
[Feb. 16th, 2007|09:45 am] |
The Mikado is finally at an end. I feel a mixture of relief that I'm free of the slightly crazy rehearsal schedule, and sadness that I won't be performing it again, at least not with the same cast or in quite the same way. It's been wonderful, though, and I can only hope I have time for the May week show. There was a G&S get-together last night at Bella Italia, which was great fun: an evening filled with laughter, as it often is with them.
The day after the last performance, I did that most obvious of relaxing, stress-free, simple things: drove to London to see a concert, of crazy German a capella, having agreed to distribute tickets to my group and having not passed any on in advance. I do wonder about my logic sometimes… but I'm glad I did, even if it was perhaps not quite on a par with last year (though that may be because it was quite similar and I'd seen it before, or because I was more worn out and thus able to understand slightly less of it). This year, they handed out translation sheets to those who raised their hands to say their German wasn't up to scratch. Of course I didn't, but then occasionally found myself looking at Susan's. *looks sheepish* In any case, with the aid of that sheet, here is a partial set list:
( More Wise Guys stuff )
Now I must get to work, so I'll leave you with ( a couple of bad filks about the Mikado get-out and after-show party ) |

| Iolanthe wrap-up; Mikado |
[Dec. 5th, 2006|06:42 pm] |
That settles it: I definitely have the G&S bug. I'll always remember Iolanthe as some of the most enjoyable music in which I've ever taken part. By all accounts the audiences loved it (thank you everyone who came to see it); I think it has improved my singing noticeably; I made some new friends there (*waves at any reading this*); it was definitely worth the time spent on it.
Therefore, I'm delighted to announce that I'll be in the chorus for The Mikado at the Arts Theatre, Tue 6th - Sat 10th February. I hope to see many of my friends there, both on stage and off. |

| Iolanthe |
[Oct. 24th, 2006|12:33 am] |
I'll be performing in the chorus of peers for G&S soc's production of Iolanthe, or The Peer And The Peri, by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. The show provisionally runs from Wednesday 29th November to Saturday 2nd December; the society website ought to have more information nearer the time.
In other news, work… continues apace, is the appropriate phrase, I think. This wouldn't be a problem, except that I almost never get to sleep at a sensible time. I'm still very much enjoying it though; indeed, I can think of no way in which I'd rather earn a living. On the first aid front, I am now theoretically qualified to be unsupervised on duty, albeit somewhat in need of revision, so I don't intend to exercise that capability any time soon. In Maelstrom, if this downtime goes according to plan, my character should be wearing and selling armour of his own manufacture at the next event. He wouldn't be much of an armourer if he didn't. Last but not least, I shall be gothy tomorrow later today, as I haven't been to the full evening's events for far too long.
The flat is finally approaching an acceptable state, except for the contents of the kitchen. I don't even have tea at the moment, which clearly Won't Do. Proper hospitality, and all that. I'm terrified of getting it to a state which I can actually declare finished, because I'm sure it would then instantly disappear and be replaced by something more bizarrely inexplicable (such as Clive's current house trouble). |

| Sanity check |
[Jun. 18th, 2006|11:51 pm] |
Checking sanity… none
I was planning to move to Cambridge on Tuesday, but I currently have no Cambridge plans until the Round ceilidh on Thursday evening. I could therefore delay the move until Thursday, catching a bit more of the BFL. If anyone wants me in Cambridge sooner than Thursday, speak now.
In other news:- Pirates has gone brilliantly so far; all who are able really should come to Warwick Arts Centre (specifically the Studio) at 8pm today (Monday) for our last performance, which is free.
- The Wise Guys now have lyrics for Radio online, including Wir hatten den Moment (very rough translation), of which the last verse and chorus are still a little close to home.</emo>
- Any Maelstrom people reading this, please raise a paw/wing/limb: I appear to have been drawn into going to the July event and have yet to create a character.

| Arrrrrrrrrrrr |
[Jun. 5th, 2006|11:54 am] |
Well, I didn't get the part, but to be quite honest, that's a relief at this point. I went to my first full run-through yesterday (missed the previous one, my bad) and there were all sorts of bits for Samuel to do; I think I'm going to have enough trouble as J Random Pirate, Esq. It's all side-splittingly good fun though. If you're coming to see it (good seats still available for the Stratford performance), look out for me towards the end of the Major General's song. Ceilidh folks might also appreciate the finale of Act I. :-)
Speaking of ceilidhs, I can't make the one this evening in Leamington (the rehearsal is full cast after all). |

| \o/ My exams, they are dead! No more, ever again! \o/ |
[Jun. 1st, 2006|05:21 pm] |
That last one went much better, too. I'd been wibbling beforehand about walking the fine line between saying profound, insightful things and making stuff up. I think, in the end, I made up one or two profound, insightful things. :-)
So, my plans then:
| Tonight | Ceilidh! (Peeping Tom, in Coventry) |
|---|
| Tomorrow (birthday) | Look at this Samuel character the Pirates lot are trying to persuade me to be now, audition for it, Chinese party |
|---|
| Saturday | Start moving into my new room, meet some Cambridge St John Ambulance people, Strawberry Fair, meet as many of you lovely people as would like to join me at The Carlton Arms for dinner (let's say 7:30ish, I may be there earlier, phone if looking for me) |
|---|
| Sunday | Pirates rehearsal (full) in the morning, maybe the LIPsoc BBQ |
|---|
| Monday | Another ceilidh, in Leamington (7pm, Newbold Comyn Arms), unless I need to be piratical |
|---|
| Tuesday | Vale Festival in Birmingham (as first aid) |
|---|
| At some point | More birthday celebrations in both Cambridge and Coventry (timed to suit the far-away visitors uisgebeatha and nightshade37 respectively), shift more things to Cambridge, … |
| Thursday 22nd June | Find out how my exams went |
|---|

| The Pirates of Spencer Park, or, Coventry has green bits |
[May. 10th, 2006|04:44 pm] |
| [ | Mood |
| | giggly | ] | As I haven't actually announced this here yet: Warwick Student Opera is performing Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance, or, The Slave of Duty, and I'm in the chorus (unnamed pirates/police). It should be great fun for those who like G&S, and there are four performances to choose from (16th-19th June). Incidentally, they're still looking for more male chorus members, so do contact them if that interests you.
I mention it now because I just cycled past one of the performance locations: on the way to the memorial park, Spencer Park (or at least, Spencer Recreation Ground, says the sign) seems to be the smaller bit of greenery to the north by the railway line. It was good to get some exercise and to cycle around the memorial park, which I think I've visited about twice in the four years I've been in the Coventry area. Oops. It's about as pretty as Coventry gets (with the possible exception of the cathedral ruins) and it's where an LJ picnic would be if it were here. Yes, I know I already mentioned that a couple of times, but, well, people, new people, picnic… these things make me happy. :-) |

| Tired... but it was good :-) |
[Sep. 20th, 2004|11:08 am] |
I've been in Cambridge for most of the weekend, ostensibly to hear tea_cantata sing, but also for much fun stuff before and after. I had a lot of good music pimped at me, including some Latvian folk-pop and a highly brain-breaking German cover of [censored], and I briefly met her friend Isa, whom no introduction can do justice.
The singing itself was rated "pretty horrific" by the choir, since apparently they messed up the end of the anthem. It seems I wasn't musical enough to notice; I thought it was all quite good.
'Twas good fun. Must go to more of these gatherings (afpmeets also). :-) |
